August 2010 – Refugee Outreach – This Friday the 20th

As the autumn season approaches and more people rejoin “normal life” sans summer vacation days, would you consider joining in OIF’s mercy ministry — to care for refugees living in Pittsburgh (specifically, in Green Tree)?

Here’s how you can get involved this month:

Community Night  - THIS FRIDAY, August 20, 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Volunteers would arrive at 6:30 p.m. to help set up some “stations.” These are various tables with specific functions such as games and crafts or English conversational practice, as starting points to engage with the refugees. Some of the people you’d meet are fairly new to the area; others who’ve been here for more than a year would still like to practice their English.

The purpose of this once-a-month gathering is to establish a first point of contact between the refugees and us, an opportunity to start becoming friends as we aim to become more deeply and genuinely connected in each other’s lives.

Interactions with the refugees during Community Night usually end around 9:30pm, and we’re usually done with clean up around 10pm.

Where: Calvary Chapel of Pittsburgh

2240 Noblestown Rd.

Greentree, PA 15205

Please email Marie ASAP at marie.w.chan@gmail.com if you’re coming, so that she can better plan for the evening’s progress. Equally important, do let her know if you need a ride or can provide rides to others.

Mercy Ministry Events for June 2010

Those who receive [OIF News] emails from Pastor Ed would already have the essential information of what/where/when’s to the two official gatherings of our mercy ministry this month. We need volunteers more than ever who want to care for refugees living in Pittsburgh (specifically, in Green Tree), as our usual reliance upon the regular service of small groups is less predictable during the summer.

Without further ado, two major ways you can get involved this month:

Community Night  - THIS FRIDAY, June 18, 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Volunteers would arrive at 6:30 p.m. to help set up some “stations.” These are just tables with specific functions such as games and crafts or English conversational practice, as starting points to engage with the refugees. Some are fairly new to the area; others who’ve been here for more than a year would still like to practice their English. Our hope for Community Night is that it can serve as a first point of contact between the refugees and us, an opportunity for us to start becoming friends.

Interactions with the refugees during Community Night usually end around 9:30pm, and we’re usually done with clean up around 10pm.

Where: Calvary Chapel of Pittsburgh (meeting place near refugees’ places of residence.)

2240 Noblestown Rd.

Greentree, PA 15205

Please email Marie at marie.w.chan@gmail.com if you’re coming, so that she can get a sense of our manpower for the evening. Also let her know if you need a ride or can provide rides to others.

AND

“Cross-Cultural Communication”This Sunday, June 20, 2010, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
A TESOL workshop/training for interested volunteers to form better communications with the refugees.
If you, as a Community Night volunteer, feel frustrated or helpless in how to initiate and maintain conversation with people from other countries, this workshop could be useful in providing you with some tools to overcome that difficulty. With hope, this training will help you improve your communication with English language learners so you can share God’s love with them more effectively.

Where: Oakland International Fellowship
134 N. Dithridge St., Pittsburgh

Instructors: Olivia Liao, ESL Teacher at Duquesne University and Marie Chan
Please RSVP soon by email to marie.w.chan@gmail.com so enough materials would be on hand for all participants.

“Natural Law vs. The Me.”

What causes the devastation of families, communities and businesses? What lies behind the collapse of the economy, the decline of infrastructure, and the deaths of over one million unborn babies every year? According to Dr. Uwe Siemon-Netto, this is the work of the Me culture, which is partly rooted in the French Revolution. Its premier philosopher, Jean Jacques Rousseau, substituted God-given Natural Law, the universal moral code, with human-made “positive law,” thus dispensing with internal contraints that limit vice.

April is Missions Month

We set aside one month out of the year to focus or refocus our hearts on missions. What does this have to do with us if we are not missionaries? A lot actually because God gives each believer the mission of telling others about Jesus, whether it’s across the ocean or to our next door neighbor. We need the reminder of how important this mission is and how each of us has a part . During Missions Month, we’ll have the chance to see what God is doing through our church’s missionaries around the world and better learn how we can be a part of God’s plan right here in Pittsburgh.

Join us Saturday, April 17th at 6:00pm for our Internationl Dinner and guest speaker, David Sorteberg. More details will follow.

“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.” Isaiah 49:6

Join Us to Pray for Haiti!

This Sunday, we will spend a section of our worship time to pray for the victims, their families, as well as the aid workers who are working so hard right now to bring relief to Haiti. Many humanitarian organizations have mentioned that the best way to help at this moment is to make monetary donations. While that is certainly the case from a certain perspective, we trust in the sovereignty and goodness of our God, who alone is in control and listens to our prayers. And our prayer is that help be sent to Haiti as swiftly and effectively as possible.

To make it convenient for you to make donations to trusted aid organizations, below are a few links and directions you can follow.

American Red Cross

Please note that the donation page on Red Cross has a long list of different funds. If you only intend to donate for the Haiti earthquake, make sure to select that fund.

You may also donate $10 to the American Red Cross by texting “HAITI” to 90999. For details visit http://www.redcross.org
